INSTRUCTORS

PARIS ALEXANDER
was born and raised in New York City where he studied art since early childhood. Paris' solo exhibitions include The Museum of World Cultures, UNC at Wilmington, Duke University, and the Fayetteville Museum of Art. His work is included in the collections of Saks Fifth Avenue, SAS Institute, Bill Clinton, Bob Dole, and many others. Paris maintains a studio at Artspace.

EILEEN DOKTORSKI
is Artspace’s 2008 Summer Artist-in-Residence. Eileen received her BFA from Parsons School of Design and her MFA from the Yale School of Art. She was a Fulbright Scholar at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland, and has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Council for the Arts, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and the Utah Arts Council. She has had fifteen solo exhibitions of her work nationally. Eileen is currently an assistant professor of sculpture at Utah State University.

SUSAN FENNELL
was raised in Japan and currently lives in Raleigh. Her degree is in English, but she teaches Japanese at Broughton High School in Raleigh. She studied art at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore, MD, and at Meredith College, Raleigh, NC, where she discovered textile arts. A workshop with the NC State University School of Design and the Japan Center re-awakened her love of indigo and shibori, which she continues to explore.

JILLIAN GOLDBERG holds a BA in Art Education from the Michaelis School of Art, University of Cape Town, S.A. She founded the Gifted and Talented Development Center at Queens University of Charlotte, NC in 1986, which for twenty-two years served thousands of bright youngsters from all over the Southeast. In 1994 she became a licensed instructor and professional trainer in the internationally renowned Monart Drawing Method, opening seven art schools in the Charlotte and Triangle areas. This year Jillian opened a new art school in Cary, named LaranJillzArt.

DAN HOHL
is a local stained glass artist with over 25 years of experience. For the past 20 years he has operated the Stained Glass Center in North Raleigh. He has taught numerous classes at his shop, at various community colleges, and in the visiting artist program at Ravenscroft School. Dan has completed numerous glass commissions for homes, chapels, and businesses throughout the area.

BART LINDSTROM
was born in Riverside, California. He currently lives in Chattanooga, TN, and works primarily in oil. He is a nationally recognized artist, conference speaker, former board member of the American Society of Portrait Artists and cofounder of the Portrait Society of America. He has taught graduate art classes, as well as numerous workshops across the country. Bart’s paintings hang in state capitols and federal courtrooms. Among his prominent collectors are: United States Senators William Armstrong and Jesse Helms, Tennessee Governor Ned McWherter, Roots author Alex Haley, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, pro-golfer Nancy Lopez, former Vice President Dan Quayle, and Secretary of State, General Colin Powell. Bart has exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries and museums across the United States and Canada. His work has appeared in various publications, including Southwest Art, Prints Magazine, Art Voice/South, American Artist magazine, and International Artist Magazine.

LENI NEWELL
is an award winning professional artist concentrating on abstract mixed media and collage since 1986. She recently moved from Raleigh to the North Carolina coast. Newell is the recipient of a Regional Artist Grant from the United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County. Her award winning, innovative work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the country. Newell recently won a public art grant from the North Carolina Art Council for a large installation in eastern North Carolina. Newell is also a popular residency and workshop leader, known for encouraging others to think abstractly, outside of the box.

SUE SOPER
was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised on Long Island. She earned a BS in Graphic Design and a minor in Art Therapy from the State University College at Buffalo, NY. Sue lived in Riverton, WY for 20 years before relocating to Clayton, NC in 2003. Since 1988, she has been drawing and creating original hand pulled lithographs. She has received additional training at the Tamarind Institute summer lithography program and Frogmans Print and Paper Workshops. Sue was previously an adjunct instructor at Central Wyoming College, as well as a visiting artist at St. Margaret’s Middle School, both in Riverton, WY. She currently maintains a studio at Artspace.

LUANA LUCONI WINNER
is a founding member of the Portrait Society of America. Her award winning portraits, paintings, and murals hang in corporate headquarters, universities, and residences both here and abroad. Luana is in demand as a speaker, national workshop instructor, and is on the faculty of the Portrait Society of America International Conference, the International Association of Pastel Societies, and other national organizations. She is author of a series of instructional workbooks and DVD’s, a contributing writer for International Artist Magazine, and coauthors the recurring “Ask the Experts” page in The Artist’s Magazine. Luana currently maintains a studio at Artspace.

LAUREN VAN HEMERT
is inspired by ephemera – everyday items often taken for granted, such as postage stamps, labels, posters, and advertisements. Her current work incorporates an appropriation of found objects using collage and image transfer techniques, to create one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art. Lauren attended Indiana University in Bloomington where she studied to be a journalist. After moving to Raleigh with her family six years ago, Lauren started experimenting with polymer clay and image transfer techniques and founded the Capital Area Polymer Clay Guild. She is a 2005, 2006, and 2007 Niche Award Finalist, and a recipient of the 2005 Jerry Miller Award. Van Hemert has been included in exhibitions at the North Carolina Craft Gallery, Artspace, and the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in Louisville. She exhibits nationally and has been featured in Ornament, Southern Living, American Style, and Our State magazines and on Home and Garden Television. She currently maintains a studio at Artspace.
