COLLABORATIVE STORY QUILT
Collaborating Service Organization: Hope Elementary
Instructor: Peg Gignoux
Peg Gignoux worked with Hope Elementary’s 5th grade class on the creation
of a vibrant art quilt. This textile residency provided the opportunity
to deliver meaningful lessons that link writing with visual images. Gignoux
began by conducting a series of arts integrated surface design and language
arts activities with the students. Students, teachers, and administrators
were challenged to come up with a compelling idea, image or theme around
which to build an expressive textile. They decided to utilize part of
the school’s motto: The Heartbeat of Hope. Under the direction of Gignoux,
students learned to dye, paint, collage, stitch, and embellish cloth,
familiarizing and teaching them about non-traditional methods and materials.
The students participated in every aspect of concept, design and construction
of the art textile.
The final work was installed permanently at Hope Elementary in December
2005.
