CLAY TILE RELIEF
Collaborating Service Organization: Raleigh Girls Club
Instructor: Mickey Gault
Participants at the Raleigh Girls Club along with instructor Mickey Gault
explored the creative process and the use of clay to create a unique clay
tile mural. The students made clay stamps, drew their own original patterns
on paper, and learned how to transfer their designs onto clay slabs. These
steps were all in preparation for creating a large collaborative project.
The girls then learned how to join clay slabs together to create one large
piece nearly 4 feet by 8 feet. They decided on a strong and simple design,
using each other and the mission of the The Raleigh Girls Club as inspiration.
The girls learned how to create a bas relief out of clay before cutting
the slab into smaller tiles. After underglazing and glazing the clay,
the tiles were all numbered and traced to help with reassembling the pieces
after the were fired in the kiln. The final week of the project was spent
reassembling the mural and writing about the experience in the Artspace
Outreach Program.
For thirty years Mickey Gault has had her hands and
soul immersed in clay. She worked as a potter for fifteen years, running
her own studio, Feat of Clay, before moving to London, England in 1984.
For three years she studied painting, sculpture, and drawing with the
Inner London Education Authority. She works professionally as a sculptor
and painter. Mickey has been an Artspace artist since 1989.
