THE
PRODUCT
Create a Batik: A Hands-on Activity Designed to Enhance your Social
Studies Curriculum
Professional artist Emily Howard will instruct students as they participate
in the hands-on activity of producing a batik. Batik is an exciting technique
for creating designs on fabric using hot melted wax and special dyes.
Unusual and beautiful effects will be created with this amazing wax-resist
technique.
This project is designed to integrate into your Social Studies curriculum.
While learning is emphasized, your students will have fun, be creative,
and be proud of the results. Final projects can be taken back to school
for you to display, frame, or hang together to create a beautiful and
unique mural.
Ms. Howard will use motivational techniques to inspire original artwork.
Fifth grade teachers are given the opportunity to select one of the following
as the focus for the batik project:
- Mexican Cultural Imagery
- Northwest Native American Cultural Imagery
- Geographic features - Landscapes/Land Forms
- Rainforest Images
EMILY HOWARD is a Raleigh fiber artist and educator.
Her focus is working with batik, but she embraces all types of media in
her work including printing, stamping, embellishment and various transfer
methods. She graduated from Meredith College in 2001 with a degree in
Studio Art concentrating in Surface Design, and she is currently working
on an MFA in Textile Design. Emily has worked as a studio assistant at
the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and has traveled extensively
through Europe. She has taught at the Boys and Girls Club, and currently
teaches several programs through Artspace.
