PAINTING A PET! (Rising 3rd-5th grade)
Learn how to paint your friendly furry friends! After studying the
eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and body of pets that you choose, we will
sketch, then paint the pets on canvas. Students should bring
photographs of their favorite pet with them on the first day of class.

COOL COMIC ART (Rising

Available
Explore the techniques of sequential art and create you very own comic
book! In this class you will learn to design characters and stories,
practice shading and line work, and finish a color cover for your

FROM STREET TO SHIRT (Rising 7th-10th
grade)
In this class a brief history of graffiti and stencils will be explored.
You will witness the progression of stencils and follow their use
in the urban art scene. Through the use of stencils, explore multiple
themes of your own interest, focusing on do-it-yourself t-shirt and
poster creation. Application techniques, as well as tool safety will
be covered. This class will be a great opportunity to explore methods
of expressing yourself to the world around you! Please plan
to bring 4-6 new t-shirts, tote bags, sweatshirts, etc. Items should

CRAZY ABOUT COLLAGE (Rising
3rd–5th grade) *New Class!*
Explore fun and inventive ways to create imagery with collage. We
will create animals, portraits and more, using fibers, fabrics, paper,
and texture. Be ready to experiment and play with lots of different
materials!

PAINTING GONE WILD (Rising
6th-8th grade) *New Class!*
In this exciting class you will explore the unique characteristics
of acrylic painting (from realism to abstraction). We’ll learn
color mixing, glazing, various painting applications, and have fun
creating textures with scraping, sponging, and printing! We’ll
focus on our favorite animals as the subject matter. Students
should bring 4-5 pictures of their favorite pet, jungle animal, colorful

IT'S OUT OF WAX!: Encaustic Painting
(Rising 7th-10th grade)
In this class we will learn the techniques of encaustic painting,
an ancient medium combining beeswax and pigment. Explore painting,
layering, and scraping using encaustic wax, and combine these techniques
with other mixed media and collage to create an extraordinary work

MUKASHI MUKASHI: ONCE UPON A TIME...
(Rising 3rd-5th grade)
Japanese folktales tell of bold heroes and creatures that perform
amazing deeds. These characters are then celebrated by portraying
them on kites and other objects. We will read a tale (or two) and
then “tell” our tales traditionally, through Gyotaku
(fish printing), Hachi Maki (head wraps) and Tako
(kites). Along the way, we may even learn to read and write a little

STAINED GLASS WALL MOSAIC (Rising
6th-8th grade)
Get ready to create your own mosaic masterpiece! Develop your own
design, transfer it to plywood, and learn a variety of mosaic techniques
including glass cutting, classic mosaic laying, and grouting. The
finished piece will be a beautiful, out of this world wall hanging!

What – or where - is Oaxaca (wah-hah-kah)? We will explore the
whimsical bright colors and simple patterns from this state in Southern
Mexico and use our new knowledge to paint our very own chairs. Each
participant will design a family keepsake chair to be proud of.
Bring your own wooden chair – preferably unvarnished. The
chair should have flat surfaces (rather than round). Instructor:

AMAZING ANIMAL MOLAS (Rising 3rd–5th
grade) Molas are
sewn shirt designs - a well-known craft of the Kuna Indian women of
the San Blah Islands, near Panama. After learning about three fabulous
techniques for designing our own Molas, we will create a
stylized fabric design, learn to draw with scissors to create a collage,
and cut and sew layered fabric onto a shirt. You’ll come out
of this class with really unique works of art to wear! Please
note students t-shirt size when registering for this class.

Tea is not just for grandmas anymore! While learning the basics of
clay handbuilding techniques, we will construct a whimsical tea pot
and matching cup set. Cartoon characters and animals will be our inspiration
for this project. Pinch, coil, and slab methods will be covered, as
we explore the functional and sculptural history of the teapot.

HAND PAPERMAKING (Rising 3rd-5th grade)
Did you know that paper has been made by hand for over two thousand
years? Join in and make your own sheets with cotton and scrap paper.
You can pound fibers and try your hand at some Extreme Printmaking
utilizing your own handmade paper. We will explore early methods of
making paper and discover interesting fibers that have been used across
the world. By the end of the week you will have created your own artwork,

THE MAGIC OF MAKE-UP - Part 1(Rising
6th-8th grade)
Have you ever wondered what you might look like as your favorite animal,
or wonder how you might look as you grow older? There’s an exciting
way to find out – the magic of theatrical make-up! In this class
you will become familiar with traditional stage make-up techniques,
as well as basic color theory and design. Each student will conceptualize
and apply make-up within the following genres: Basic Stage, Old Age,
Clown, Animal, and Fantasy. Students will develop make-up portfolios
containing both photos and sketches documenting their progress. This
is a great class for any student interested in theatre, film, or just
looking for some great ideas for next Halloween – the possibilities

PAINT YOUR DREAMS (OR NIGHTMARES!)
(Rising 7th-10th grade) *New Class!*
In this class you will focus on capturing images that come to you
while you sleep. Using acrylic paint on canvas, we will then have
a visual record of all of those fantastic thoughts and images that
your mind creates at night! A wonderful painted creation of these
memories will survive long after the mind has forgotten. Instructor:

ARTSY ARCHITECTURE (Rising 3rd-5th

Class!*
Observe and sketch architectural styles in and around Artspace. Begin
developing an understanding of western architecture and its history.
You will have the chance to become both an architect and an interior
designer as you learn to develop plans, drawings, and models complete
with color, texture, and pattern. You will create multiple architectural
designs and renderings as well as one 3-dimensional model using only

POWER OF PRINT (Rising 6th-8th grade)

From Thomas Paine’s revolutionary pamphlet to current graphic
novels, books and the printed word have changed the world! Has the
internet made the book obsolete? NO WAY! We will explore new and old
forms of the book, and experiment with various physical formats you
can use to get your message out. We will make paper, print on it,
make a publication -and learn how to do it all inexpensively and at

SEE IT...DRAW IT! (Rising 7th-10th
grade)
Whether you are a painter or potter, sculptor or weaver, designer
or cartoonist, you've got to start at the "drawing board.”
In this class we will cover all the basic drawing techniques and explore
a variety of media. After learning to draw portraits, large landscapes
on location, still-life, and some of our own personal favorite subjects,
we will assemble them into our handmade portfolios for easy access
and display. So come and create some fabulous works and a cool art

FACE UP TO IT! (3rd-5th grade)
Let your personality shine through! Utilizing photos and mirrors in
this imaginative class, we will learn to draw and paint creative self-portraits
and portraits of friends and family members. There will be experimentation
with pastels, watercolors, tempera, and more to produce portraits

EXPLORING THE SURFACE: Fashionable Fiber
(Rising 6th-8th grade)
Using many interesting surface design techniques, we will create beautiful
wall hangings, paintings, and clothing, including t-shirts and scarves.
We will look at many methods of dyeing, screenprinting, and stamping,
focusing on design, repetition, pattern, and texture. We will look
at the importance of text in art, and experiment with words and letters
in our own work. After exploring the many techniques, we will produce
a few completed pieces. If you like to collage or design your own
clothes, you will definitely enjoy this class! Students wishing
to work on clothing items should plan to bring pre-washed 100% cotton
or rayon white T-shirts or other clothing items. Instructor:

PIQUE ASSIETTE (Rising 7th-10th grade)
Explore the freedom of using broken plates to create unique artwork.
Pique Assiette (French, meaning “stolen plate”) is the
term for mosaics made from broken plates, china, and ceramics. In
this class we will learn how to safely and precisely cut a plate,
bowl, figurine, cup, etc., and then design a mosaic mirror and art
panel. We will also cover how to “level” or compensate
for different thicknesses of individual pieces (to achieve a smooth
surface), as well as grouting techniques. Instructor:

In this class we will review and expand upon basic stage make-up skills.
You will develop historical and celebrity likeness designs, and learn

This class will explore the unique characteristics of acrylic paint
as a vehicle for expressing your artistic vision. We will master color

At the end of the week, you will have a unique, one-of-a-kind, completed

BIG ON BATIK! (Rising 6th-8th grade)
Batik is an exciting technique used to create paintings on cloth utilizing
hot melted wax and special dyes. It is an ancient art form that originated
in Indonesia and is still very popular today. Enjoy the challenge
of working with new materials to create unusual, one-of-a-kind batik
paintings or articles of clothing. Fabric will be available
but students wishing to batik clothing items should plan to bring
pre-washed 100% cotton or rayon white T-shirts or other clothing items.

CASTING THE HUMAN FIGURE
(Rising 7th-10th grade) *New Class!*
The human form has inspired countless works of art. Since ancient
times molds taken directly from the body have been used in the process
of making figurative sculpture. Learning to cast faces, hands and
larger sections of the body is exciting and imaginative! In this class
you will work with your peers to reproduce body gesture and facial
expression. Each person takes on the roles of creative director, technician,
and model to fully understand what is possible. Alginate, a non-toxic
mold material, will be used to capture exact details in minutes. Casting
plaster will be poured or brushed into these molds producing exact

CUT IT OUT! (Rising 6th-8th grade)

Class!*
Get creative with scissors and paper! By layering cut paper designs,
students will explore the concepts of symmetry, asymmetry, abstraction,
patterns and negative vs. positive space. We will look at cut paper
art from the past, which was sometimes used to create stencils for
patterns on textiles, as well as explore a few contemporary artists
using cut paper techniques. Students will then create their own cut
paper stencils which will become beautiful layered paintings through

ROLL, INK, PRINT (Rising 7th-10th grade)

From inking the plate to printing on a 1900 lithography press, waterless
lithography is a fun printmaking technique. Translate your unique
drawings or paintings into a small edition of original hand pulled
prints. The prints can even be made into note cards if desired. Students
will have the choice to print in color or black and white. Instructor:

CREATE LIKE AN EGYPTIAN (Rising 3rd–5th

Using symbols and themes from ancient Egypt, we will create mummy
boxes and mummies, small tomb animals, canopic jars, and a relief
tile. You will create an identity for your mummy and then make objects

PORTRAIT THIS! (Rising 6th-8th grade)
This class is packed with a variety of "portrait-projects"
that will be assembled into your choice of either a sketch book, comic
book, story book, or diary. For inspiration we'll be working on portraits
of pals, self-portraits, and live-model sessions within the class.
You will learn how to create portraits using pencil, charcoal, paint,
and mixed-media. You'll amaze yourself at your accomplishments!

GIANT JUNK FOOD! (Rising 7th-10th
grade)
Have you seen works of art by Clause Oldenburg, Coosje van Bruggen,
and Andy Warhol? This Pop Art of the past is amazing and will be our
inspiration to create larger-than-life sculptures using recycled materials.
We will focus on our favorite junk food treats as the subject matter!
After we complete our works of art, we will take photographs of the
sculptures, emphasizing their unique scale and proportion. Instructor:

PUPPETRY (Rising 3rd-5th grade) *New

Create a rod puppet from a styrofoam egg, wooden rods, and paper maché.
Learn manipulation skills from a professional puppeteer. The class
will culminate in a puppet show featuring variety acts performed by
your puppet. Experience the excitement of performing in a real puppet
theater! You will then have a puppet to take home after the final

Using stencil techniques, incised lines, and mixed media, you will
design and create encaustic wax paintings of your own ideal imagined
city. We will look at books as well as the architecture of downtown

IGNITE YOUR PORTRAITS WITH CHARCOAL
(Rising 7th-10th grade) *New
Class!*
In this class you will be introduced to facial proportions, as well
as new ways to create charcoal drawings. You will begin by creating
random textures and patterns on large sheets of watercolor paper that
will become “underdrawings” for a final work of art.

Class!*
Draw and paint different types of trees, as well as the animals that
live in and around them. Our paintings will show our favorite forest
animals such as bluebirds, rabbits, and deer in their native habitats.

SCREENPRINTING MADE EASY (Rising 6th-8th
grade)
Learn to print your own designs on t-shirts, fabric, cards, and paper
using paper stencils and the drawing-fluid/screen-filler methods.
Achieve amazing effects and create multiples of your own artwork with
this simple and enjoyable medium. Even if you have never screenprinted
before, you will be delighted with the results! Students
should bring several clean, pre-washed, light colored shirts with
them. 100% cotton is best but 50% cotton, 50% polyester is ok too.
The shirts should have no collars or pockets and should not be ribbed.

JUMP INTO ACRYLIC PAINTING (Rising
7th-10th grade) *New Class!*
Acrylic paint is a way to jumpstart painting on canvas and board.
It is odorless, inexpensive, quick-drying, and can be manipulated
to mimic not only oils, but many various and wonderful surfaces. In
this class we will complete several exercises that will train the
eye and the hand. Our final study will be a chance for you to explore
a personal theme through a finished triptych (three part) painting!

IN THE SHADOWS (Rising 3rd–5th

Let’s discover what is hiding in the stop sign shadow, or the
chair shadow, or possibly that unusual shadow cast on the wall! In
this class we will explore the importance and power of light in the
visual arts by “catching” shadows on paper. Using color
and light theory with illustration and painting techniques, students
will translate amorphous shapes into a striking composition and beautiful

HIP HANDBAGS (Rising 6th-8th

Design and sew your own purse or tote bag in this class. We will select
material, cut the fabric, and construct the handbag using hand sewing
skills. We will work on color combinations and design to make your

grade)
In this class we will use a new approach to delve into the unique
characteristics of the landscape. Acrylic paint will be used primarily
to express your artistic vision to represent your favorite landscape.
We will learn color mixing, paint application methods, ways of utilizing
a variety of tools to create texture, and other basic painting techniques
that will aid in making fun and exciting paintings. By the end of
this class you will have developed a one-of-a-kind completed work

Get your hands wet as we learn the magic of feltmaking, an ancient
technique using wool and warm water to create a dense, non-woven fabric.

FABULOUS FLOORCLOTHS (Rising 6th-8th
grade) *New
Class!*
The use of floorcloths as painted decorative floor coverings began
in early 18th century Britain. Also known as oilcloth, painted carpet,
common carpet, or summer floor mats, floorcloths today are used to
decorate entryways, hallways, and to accentuate wood and uncarpeted
floors. In this class you will create your own design and transfer

STAINED GLASS FOR BEGINNERS (Rising 7th-10th grade)
This class will teach the basics of glass work. We will design and
create stained glass works of art using the copper foil method, as
developed by Louis Tiffany at the turn of the century. You will learn
the history of stained glass and safety methods, as well as techniques
for designing, cutting, and soldering. You will also learn about glass
fusing techniques, creating unique glass pendants and pins! Instructor:
